What are some things to know about saxophones?

there are 3 sizes in sax, alto(large and heavy), tenor (midsize), and soprano (small/light), the tenor sax is far and away the most popular and best for learning to play and improvising, saxophones like clarinets are similar in hand position and playing, both require a "reed" in the mouth piece to produce the sound. a music store usually has a stock on hand. the sax reed is from one and a half to three inches in length. some reeds have grooved bases(vibrator reed). reeds need to be moist to keep their flexibility and to prevent splitting, while playing, your tenor sax comes with a neck strap making it easier to hold while playing. buyng a used sax can save money jf the springs and pads on the valves are in good shape and there isn't damage to prevent smooth and easy movement. take a sax player with you when you select your instrument, remember to cover your lower teeth with your lip and a short distance from the edge to protect the reed, the reed side of the mouth piece is allways on the lower side. shop around for a good music store they should have the books, reeds, and information you need, also knowledge of where you can find whatever lessons you need. remember, the alto and soprano sax's are used only in limited musical pieces. ..enjoy yourself!!!
