I have a roommate diagnosed with Chlamydia what steps should I take to prevent exposure?

Firstly, is it probable that Chlamydia can be contracted outside of ? Since it is a bacteria can this spread on surfaces like toilet seats, laundry machines and tables etc. Is it best to avoid physical contact like; handshakes, hugs etc. ?
